Biomedical Engineering in NIGERIA
SCHOOL OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA
School of Biomedical engineering Zaria – NIGERIA was established in 1969. Firstly, it was to repair and maintain medical instruments Within Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria and then Six Northern states mainly Kano, Kaduna, Kastina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Maiduguri. The biomedical training was initially started as an on the Job Training programme. In 1972, the training of the personnel for other health institution in the catchment area was started and the school then offered 2-year certificate course, the Certificate course become formal in 1982. By 1983/1984 academic session, the Diploma course was introduced and the main campus of the school located inside Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Shikka Nigeria.
In the year 2009, Federal University of Technology owerri started running the program at undergraduate level and subsequently M.Sc. and Ph.D follow. Also, toward end of year 2016, university of Ilorin produced the first set of graduates of (B.Engr.) Biomedical Engineering. Currently, we have 6 universities offering the program at degree level while 5 at certificate and diploma level.
Subsequently, BME as a profession of inter disciplinary become necessary in all corner of Nigeria health sector to offer effective and accurate delivery service to patient within and outside cities. Few of medical equipments available across healthcare service provider are not in functional state so these call urgent solution through awareness and establishment of BME across universities in Nigeria.
HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF BME COURSE IN NIGERIA
The area of specialty within BME in Nigeria range from Bioinstrumentation, Nanotechnology, Clinical deformity and rehabilitation engineering, Computational Biomechanics , but only few schools among the listed one that offer postgraduate level at M.Sc. and Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering because the profession itself still remain virgin in the country, due to the fact the highest percentage of the school offering program in BME currently are only in Diploma stationed at various colleges of Health technology and School of biomedical engineering Technology while only few among the private and federal universities offering the courses presently. From year 2010 to date the number of biomedical technicians trained at various school of Biomedical engineering has increased to 25% compared to early year 2000.
ADMISSION PROCEDURE
To get admission into any of the university or polytechnic, the procedures of admission for intake are based on merit, one has to sit for the Joint admission and matriculation board (JAMB) with not less than 200 point and above similar for the certificate and diploma course entrance exam will also quality a candidate.
For direct entry candidate will have at least five credits in SSCE or its equivalent, which must include English, mathematics, chemistry, and biology not below grade C or OND with upper credit in biomedical engineering, mechanical, chemical or electrical engineering.
Every candidate seeking admission into BME though JAMB must take UMTE subjects: English Language, mathematics, physics and chemistry like for other engineering discipline.
